You can also call the shop 973-377-5648 (KNIT) with payment or come in :) If you have a problem signing up please email us at info@thebluepurl.com with your phone number and we will assist you, or put you on the waitlist. We are keeping the same phone number but best to email.

  • Refunds for cancellations available only 72 hours before first class.

Learn the basics of knitting in this 6 week intensive class

This class will cover the basics of learning to knit. You’ll learn basic techniques including casting on, knitting and purling, decreasing, reading a pattern and binding off while making cotton washcloths, simple fingerless mitts and a super cute, super chunky hat. This is a great, comprehensive way to begin your knitting adventure!

Whether you're an avid knitter who has never picked up a crochet hook (except for dropped stitches) or never worked with yarn at all, this is a perfect class! In these sessions you'll learn the basics of crochet while creating a scarf. Techniques include: single, double, half double, and triple crochet, Foundation chain, scalloped edge & pattern reading.

The New Einstein Coat designed by Sally Melville is a classic and a great first sweater for beginners.  The boxy coat is constructed entirely in garter stitch (no purling) and uses bottom-up construction.  Construction starts with the bottom section.  Fronts, back and sleeves are later picked up from the bottom section.  The only seam is from the wrist to the collar.  Learn to: make button holes, attach buttons, pick up stitches, make a slip-stitch edge, and sew seams.  This class has homework.

Prior to class:  Purchase yarn at The Blue Purl, make a 4’ x 4” gauge swatch and bring to first class

This blanket is a fun, interesting and rewarding project.   The pattern for the class is found in the booklet called Building Blocks by Michelle Hunter.  It includes the patterns for 12 blocks, each made with different stitch patterns, which will then be sewn together to make a blanket.  In this first session of the class we will make 6 blocks, and in the next 6-class session, we will make the final 6 blocks.  The stitch patterns will give you a great introduction to many different skills, which you can then put to good use in future projects!  

Techniques include: simple chart reading, cables, simple lace, increases, decreases, bobbles and more!

Elizabeth Zimmermann was a British-born knitting teacher and designer. She revolutionized the modern practice of knitting and her Baby Surprise Jacket has become near legendary since its conception in 1968. The jacket is ingeniously knitted back and forth in garter stitch incorporating increases and double decreases to miter the corners, then cleverly folded and completed by weaving the shoulder seams.  It’s been described as “a very entertaining piece of knitted engineering”.

Techniques include: knitting (no purling), increases, double deceases, 2 simple seams

You can create your own magical comfort chicken, that doesn’t need a permit to always be with you! It is loveable and huggable and you don’t even have to feed it to love you back! The chicken is knitted in worsted weight yarn using garter stitch (no purling) and is shaped using basic short rows. There are a few simple seams to connect the parts and then it’s stuffed with fiberfill to make it soft and squishy.

Techniques include: knitting (no purling), decreases, increases, wrap & turn short rows, picking up stitches.

The Moby Slipover from PetiteKnit is knitted top-down in interesting cable and texture patterns. The design cleverly starts at the back neck and when the armholes are reached the back stitches are rested and you continue with the fronts, eventually joining everything and knitting the body. The armhole bands and neckband are picked up and added when the body is completed. You’ll learn to master chart-reading while making this classic, versatile vest.

Techniques include: increases and decreases, chart reading, picking up stitches, (optional) Italian bind-off

The Harris Hood is a one-size oversized hood that fits loosely around your neck and head and will add warmth and style to any winter outfit. It is made seamlessly by knitting the sections and picking up stitches for the following sections. It’s shaped with increases and deceases and is finished off with a cozy double layered front edge. It’s knitted with 2 strands of yarn held together, one of which is fuzzy to add warmth and softness.

Techniques include: picking up stitches, inrceases and decreases, (optional) Italian bind-off

This elegant and cheerful bunting is full of texture and perfect for any holiday decorating or gift giving. Pick a color scheme that matches your decor or holiday theme and make small, medium, large or full size motifs.  The largest size is 11 rounds with color changes for each round.  Fewer rounds, smaller size.  Add a second side and stuff with polyfil.  They can also be used as ornaments.  The options are limitless.  This is being offered as a workshop where we will make one full size motif and stuff.

Who can resist a cuddly bear sweater on a cuddly baby?  This crocheted sweater is so sweet. The sweater is made from the top down in one piece with ribbed cuffs and body edge.  Embroidered baby bear facial features are added on a solid color or stripe (as seen on pattern).
